  • In less than two years since its founding, the AI personal assistant  has raised nearly $49 million
  • The capital will allow Luzia to expand its presence in Latin American markets with the opening of a new headquarters in Brazil

  • The funding will also support the recruitment of specialized talent to join one of the few companies in Spain where it’s possible to learn about artificial intelligence

Madrid, May 6, 2025. Luzia, the Spanish company that developed the AI personal assistant with over 65 million users across more than 40 countries, has closed a new funding round of $13.5 million. The round was led by Prosus Ventures, one of the largest global tech and e-commerce investors, and includes previous round participants Khosla Ventures, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm focused on tech innovation, and Monashees, a Brazilian fund specializing in Latin American technology. This round comes less than a year after its last capital raise of $20.5 million, bringing its total funds raised to date to nearly $49 million since 2023.

This capital injection will enable Luzia to enhance its product, integrate cutting-edge technology and more sophisticated tools, and add features to enrich the user experience, ultimately building a product that anyone can use, matching diverse interests and profiles. The investment will also strengthen Luzia’s footprint in Latin America, particularly in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina. These countries are experiencing the highest user growth — positioning Luzia as a leader in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets. To reinforce its presence in the region, Luzia will open its first office in Brazil this year, with the goal of attracting local talent, maintaining direct contact with Latin American markets, and tailoring the product to the region’s specific needs.

The investment will also go towards expanding the current team, adding engineers and designers who will have the opportunity to work at one of the few companies in Spain where they can actively participate in and learn from the development of artificial intelligence.

Luzia’s headquarters are in Madrid, home to most of its team, with additional offices in Barcelona and Alicante.

Álvaro Higes, Founder and CEO of Luzia, emphasizes: “Luzia began as a friendly chat companion; we’re now turning it into the friction-free operating layer for daily life in Spanish and Portuguese. Our north star is radical accessibility—AI that’s effortless, private, and culturally fluent for everyone, not just tech insiders. Prosus shares that conviction and, with their global footprint and execution depth, is the perfect partner for our next chapter.”

Significant growth in just two years

Luzia has experienced continuous growth since its founding by Álvaro Higes in May 2023, including four funding rounds in under two years from prominent investors such as $3.4 from A*, who has invested in companies like Pinterest, Airbnb, PayPal and Uber, a Series A led by Khosla Ventures and joined by business angels such as Pau Gasol, and a Series B round led by Monashees, with participation from Khosla Ventures and Endeavor Catalyst. This new $13.5 million round, led by Prosus Ventures, strengthens Luzia’s role as a hub for artificial intelligence in Spain.

The company has also achieved exceptional market penetration, surpassing platforms like Instagram and Spotify in adoption speed, making it the fastest-growing B2C AI startup in Europe. It is now present in over 40 countries, has amassed 65 million users worldwide, and is ranked as the 29th top generative AI app globally by Andreessen Horowitz. The app has reached nearly 35 million downloads - making it one of the top 10 most downloaded apps in 12 LatAm markets -  worldwide and is also available on WhatsApp and Telegram with select features. Today, it is the largest independent conversational AI company in Latin America.

Just as Prosus identified the rise of the consumer internet early through investments in companies like iFood, OLX, and Swiggy, it now sees AI assistants as a powerful new entry point to commerce, services, and information. With 65 million users across Latin America and strong product-market fit, Luzia is already demonstrating how locally built AI can meet real-world needs at scale. Prosus also sees strong synergies across its ecosystem in areas like food delivery, e-commerce, and education, and believes the assistant’s conversational interface can serve as a powerful new channel for discovery, engagement, and transactions across these sectors.

Meeting an overarching mission: Accessible AI with a free and inclusive tool

Luzia is a personal AI assistant that helps users with their daily tasks. It’s a multifunctional chatbot that interprets images and documents, transcribes audio, translates text, solves calculations, and generates images from descriptions. Luzia uses advanced AI models, delivers a high-quality and personalized experience, and adapts to cultural and linguistic differences. The app ensures data privacy, processing messages anonymously without storing them or using them for training.

“We believe generative AI is fundamentally reshaping how people interact with the internet—moving from passive searches to active conversations, from anonymous tools to trusted assistants,” said Sandeep Bakshi, Head of European Investments, Prosus Ventures. “Luzia is at the forefront of this shift, building an intuitive, accessible interface tailored to the way people communicate in its core markets, especially across Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions. Whether it’s booking travel or ordering groceries, Luzia makes it as easy as chatting with a friend on WhatsApp. We’re excited to back a team that’s democratizing AI for everyday use.”

Luzia offers a 100% proprietary app aimed at democratizing access through a free, universal, easy-to-use, and secure service, enhancing user experience with more advanced and unlimited features.
