Starting a podcast or YouTube channel from scratch: what you need (it's less than you think)

There’s an idea that’s been floating around in a lot of people’s heads for a while: “I could do a podcast about this” or “I’d have enough material for a YouTube channel.” And then nothing happens, because the gap between the idea and reality seems insurmountable. Expensive equipment, hours of editing, an audience to build from scratch… The list of obstacles ends up being longer than the motivation. Luzia won’t do the recording for you, but it can drastically shorten that list of obstacles.
The first question to ask
Before we talk about microphones and editing software, there’s a more important question: Why do you want to do this? Not in a philosophical sense, but in a practical one. Do you want to share your knowledge about something you’re experienced in? Interview interesting people? Build a community around a specific niche? Or simply have a creative space to explore a topic you’re passionate about?
The answer to that question determines the format, frequency, tone, and channel. And it’s the perfect conversation to have with your AI assistant before you buy or record anything.
What you really need to get started (spoiler: it's very little)
For a podcast
A lavalier microphone costing €20–30 connected to your phone provides perfectly acceptable sound quality to get started. A room with minimal reverberation (closets filled with clothes work surprisingly well as makeshift recording booths). And a free app for recording and basic editing. That’s all you need to publish your first episode.
For a YouTube channel
Today's smartphone cameras record video in more than adequate quality. Natural light from a properly positioned window is better than many amateur lighting setups. And audio, once again, is what matters most: a video with mediocre visuals but good audio is much more tolerable than the other way around.
How AI Speeds Up the Process
Define the concept and niche
You can ask your assistant to help you refine your idea: who it’s specifically for, what problem it solves or what experience it offers, how it differs from what already exists, and how you could describe it to someone in a single sentence.
Planning the first episodes or videos
AI can help you structure your first ten episodes or videos: what topics to cover, what order makes the most sense, and how to ensure that each installment provides value on its own while also building toward something bigger.
Prepare scripts and outlines
You don't need to read a script word for word, but having a clear structure before recording makes a huge difference in the final quality. AI can help you build those structures: an engaging opening, a body with key points, and a memorable closing.
Everything else
Click-worthy headlines, search-optimized descriptions, names for your podcast or channel, cover art ideas... These are tasks that AI can help you tackle quickly so you can focus on what really matters: the content.
The only mistake that really matters
Don't wait to get started. Everything else can be improved over time: audio quality, speaking pace, editing, design. What you can't get back is the time you spend waiting for the perfect setup before recording your first episode.
Record the first one this week. It doesn't have to be good. It just has to exist.
