A deepfake is content—video, audio, images, or text—generated or manipulated by AI to appear real. The name comes from "deep learning" (the type of AI that creates them) and "fake" (false). The technology has advanced so rapidly that by 2026, it will be possible to create convincing fake videos using just a smartphone and a free app.
What makes them particularly dangerous is not just their technical quality, but the speed at which they spread. A well-crafted deepfake can go viral before anyone debunks it. The debunking, when it comes, is always too late and reaches far fewer people.
Signs that help you spot them
Video deepfakes often give themselves away in the details: irregular or absent blinking, poorly rendered teeth or hands (AI still struggles with fingers), hair that moves strangely, expressions that don’t quite match the audio, or a background that looks slightly out of focus. But the most effective tool isn't a technological one: it's the habit of pausing before believing and sharing. Most fake content spreads because it triggers a strong emotional response (outrage, fear, surprise) that bypasses critical thinking.
The basic steps to take before sharing something shocking
First: Where does it come from? Is it a source you’re familiar with that has a track record of reliability? Second: Are there other independent sources that confirm it? If it only appears in one place, be skeptical. Third: Does it have a clear date and context? Content taken out of context is the most common form of misinformation. Fourth: How does it make you feel? If it triggers a very intense emotion, that’s all the more reason to verify it before sharing it.
It’s not paranoid skepticism. It’s media literacy in an environment where anyone can create compelling content.
